Typewriter Bird?
02.26.06 (2:13 am)   [edit]
I'm always interested in peculiar bird behavior. I came across this video several months ago but I thought it would be good to share. This tropical bird has a very special and unique way of attracting his mate. The video would probably be a little better without the interupting clips of the creepy bird lady doing her own dance. http://www.filecabi.net/video...

I came across this short video clip tonight. What's this world coming to? Up is down-----Black is white---Day is night-------and cats think they're dogs!

Another friend has joined the dark side and started her own blog. I'd appreciate it if everyone went over to Pam's blog and check out her posts and comment. She's quite a movie buff and her favorite time of year is here...the Oscars!! Welcome to the sphere, Pam!

What Do You See?
01.26.06 (10:27 pm)   [edit]

I came across this photo one day while messing around on flickr.com. It's a great site where people can display their digital photos. Many people there are photographers by hobby...others perhaps by trade.

This photo caught my attention though. It's simple.....a simple scene....a simple task....by a simple worker....but it is so compelling just to look at it and wonder what's happening.

 Any thoughts?

Something To Look Forward.....To.

I can't wait to see what his show will be like! http://edition.cnn.com/2006/S... I've been listening to Glenn Beck since 2001 and I must say he's the most entertaining talk show host I've ever heard. If the hardline right and left talk shows turn you off then I would suggest listening to him sometime. The 3rd most listened to talk show in the nation right now, Beck keeps his show fresh with a unique outlook on current political and social events.

I hope the people at weeklystandard.com don't mind me using their picture. I thought it was witty.

So the big stink this week in the news is the issue of President Bush's approval of using wiretaps to aid intelligence agencies in gaining information on suspected terrorists abroad and here in the country.

The President's critics claim he is abusing his power and will use these wiretaps to spy on political enemies instead. One thing that stands out in my mind is when those critics blamed Bush for not doing enough to try to prevent the 9/11 attacks after he got information the previous month. The information even mentioned attacks using planes. He didn't do near as much as he is now and he was strongly criticized for that. Well, now he has the authority to do everything he can to gain as much information as he can and they're complaining again. He can't win in the eyes of those who simply hate him and crave for impeachment.

There are 75.

What's the Deal?
11.21.05 (8:30 pm)   [edit]
Everyone, check out my latest link, Truk. Truk (Stacy) is one of Evil Petting Zoo's hardcore members. As you'll see @ truck.com, he takes great adventures into the wild kingdom. He goes to places I want to go to yet cannot because I am always working, selling the camping gear to those who CAN go!

And that's the deal...that's why I haven't written much these last few months. By the end of the day I am mentally drained and trade blog-time for sleep. Also, I sometimes go through the thought process of:
[image]riverrat338_993231 777.jpg[/image]

I think of a lot of topics but I give up once I realize there's not another, better, way to say it.

But then I think:

[image]riverrat338_934829 200.jpg[/image]

So, why not go ahead and write something? Well, I just don't have the motivation I suppose. I need some inspiration.....but I tend to agree with this last poster...

Something Thing To Think About
11.18.05 (9:45 pm)   [edit]
It's 1am and I just opened a big tall can of Yoohoo Chocolate "Drink". I don't suppose it's milk, but it sure tastes good.

I was listening to a radio show this week and the host discussed a story out of Great Britain about a man who was diagnosed with HIV. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/he... The story goes on to explain that he went back to a health clinic a year and a half later and, after more tests, was told that he no longer had HIV. According to physicians the young man's body had "cured itself" of the virus. There have been anecdotes of such "miracles" in Africa but this is the first documented case to gain worldwide interest in the AIDS research community.
The man refuses to allow researchers to do further tests on him. This is the crux of my entry.

Lately there's been much ado about Eminent Domain issues in our country. The power of a local, state, or federal government to take over private property with the intent of using it for the good of the many. Can this also be the case for a human being? Say, for argument's sake, that this young man HAS indeed a unique DNA capable of eliminating the AIDS virus by its own means. And if he continues to refuse to allow any more tests that could possibly strike a blow to a disease so deadly and dreaded as AIDS, would the government be justified in forcing this man to allow tests? Could he be held without his permission for an unlimited amount of time?
Before you answer, make sure you ask yourself how you would react if you were that man. You have in your body a possible cure for the most feared and deadly disease mankind currently faces; a disease that threatens the lives of nearly 40 million people worldwide. Would you be able to withhold the possible promise of survival to 40 million people?

Is this a matter of private liberty and personal rights vs. the good of the many? In essence, "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few....or the one." Before I digress into more "Spockisms" I'll ask one more question before I turn it over to you and your opinions.
If a cure for AIDS is found through this man's DNA, would that have any impact of the actions of those people who contract HIV through sexual contact or drugs? Would it cause someone to think that, "since there's a cure I can do whatever I want and not have to worry about the consequences."?......hmmm...consequences...another can of worms perhaps for another day.

The good folks over at Crotchfish tagged me with this challenge:

* Go into your archives
* Find your 23rd post
* Post the fifth sentence (or closest to it)
* Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions
* Tag five other people to do the same thing

Well, here it is: "It looked like pure white snow as far as i could see. Almost like i was at the north pole...or south pole for that matter.....fluffy, textured, rippled "ground". from april 2004. "Greetings From PA"

ahhh yes, that was a fun trip. My first trip by plane.
That reminds me, I think I still have one of my favorite pictures from that trip. It was a road sign out in the Amish country or Central PA. Come to your own conclusions as to what it is teaching.

Time to Wake Up
10.08.05 (8:55 pm)   [edit]
Fall weather finally arrived this week. A brisk north wind rushed in thursday with some great cool air. The mornings have been chilly and the afternoons very pleasant. The breeze feels good. It almost seems like the air smells different....it smells better (even in Memphis if you can buy that).
The sounds even seem different. It's like the noise of summer faded and you're left with a calm silence. And it's this time when I begin to perk up.

Sure, I like the summer. The fishing's great, I can wear sandals and shorts and get sunburned a few times. I can get those annual tan lines on my feet. This year I bought some Crocs http://www.thecrocsstore.com/... I got the Emerald ones. Instead of tanlines I got tan dots. My feet looked pretty funny. They're almost gone now though.
A lot of people seem to think my crocs look "gay" but hey, they're comfortable as heck and I'm safe enough in my straightness that I can wear some goofy looking sandals and get on with my life.
But the time to put them up is nigh.

If you know me well enough, you know I am a Univ. of TN fan. They lost to Georgia this weekend. I wasn't surprised. They don't have a very productive offense this year. I guess it's that time of year when we Vol fans say "there's always next year." But the Cardinals just won the NL division series against the Padres tonight. And the Redskins are 4-0 going into week 5. So there's some consolation I suppose.

But it's fall. It's October. Halloween will be here soon. My birthday not too far behind...and thanksgiving of course.
Then duck season will arrive. My favorite time of year...winter! So it's time to get goin'.

kleptoblogging.....

from the Glenn Beck website...a humerous poll.

Donald Sutherland, star of the ABC sitcom Commander-In-Chief says that the real President George W Bush “will destroy our lives!” Has President Bush destroyed your life yet?
NO
NO, but since I’m a cute baby caribou I expect him to soon destroy my life.
NO, but that’s only because I’m rich.
NO, under the Bush administration things have never been better down at the hurricane making factory where I work.
YES
YES, George Bush’s hurricane machine destroyed my life.
YES, I’m a tree and my life has been destroyed by President Bush and his anti-environmental policy of killing trees.

DO-DO-DO-DOO....DOOT-DOOT-DOOOOOOO....

I noticed the title of my recent entry concerning PETA was "Of Biblical" instead of the full intended title "Of Biblical Proporktions"
I THOUGHT that's what I typed...but tonight the Proporktions part wasn't there....hmmm

I went ahead and put it up there this time.

If you've been "fortunate" enough to see the new Coke commercial during the previews at your local theater, or on TV now, you'll notice that G-Love and Special Sauce are singing and chilling on a rooftop with some Coke.
It's good to see ole G-Love is still finding employment. This "college gig" band is from back in my college days, but they didn't really make it to Dave Matthews status.

I thought I would have been one of the only people out there who recognized them in this Coke commercial but I was wrong. http://www.driftreality.com/w...
This blogger seems very upset about the whole thing. Check it out!

Of Biblical Proporktions
09.09.05 (7:01 pm)   [edit]
I never get into political or religious issues on this blog. The main reason being is I have seen bloggers who focus on such things with every punch of the keyboard. It's like beating a dead horse sometimes.......speaking of which, I bring you this website. http://forums.joeuser.com/For...

It seems that Peta has "taken up the cross" and decided to attempt their own crusade of sorts. By using various passages in the bible, Peta tries to compel its readers to put down their spatulas (unless you're cooking veggie burgers) and pick up the bowl of sprouts. I have never liked Peta's tactics of advertising nor its choice of protesting theatrics. But this one tops them all. According to Peta. "only vegetarians can be observant Christians, Jews, Mormons, and Muslims."

"At the "Animal Rights 2002" national convention, Animal Liberation author and avowed atheist Peter Singer lamented that "mainstream Christianity has been a problem for the animal movement." Two days later at the same event, a program director with the Fund for Animals issued a warning: "If we are not able to bring the churches, the synagogues, and the mosques around to the animal rights view," he cautioned, "we will never make large-scale progress for animal rights in the United States."
More from that article can be found here: http://www.consumerfreedom.co...

I won't go off on a rant about how ignorant these people are. Or how full of hatred they are. Or how far removed from the land many of our society has become. I think anyone who knows me well enough knows that I am an avid outdoorsman. I hunt, I fish, responsibly and ethically.
I eat animals wild and commercially raised. If a person chooses not to eat meat I certainly respect their choice. However, I'm not educated well enough to know how healthy (or unhealthy) it is for our bodies to do that. But to make such an outrageous display as Peta has done this time is beyond logic, science, reason, and religion.

Not everyone would agree with me, I'm sure. But if they choose to argue with me here let me remind you: http://www.chocolatecityweb.c...

Finally, when a top Peta spokesperson was asked if he thought this portrayal would be upsetting to God he answered "I don't believe God would be offended by just words and images."

So much for 2 of the 10 commandments eh?

If ONLY regular unleaded STILL cost that much!
It's 12:30am, september 1st. I just drove by the Exxon down the road. The parking lot was still packed with a line of cars extending onto the side street. Vehicles all lined up trying to get one more tank for under $3/gallon. Right across the street another gas station had plastic bags wrapped around their pump handles. Down the road a mile or 2....same thing.....Are they emtpy? Or are they saving what's left for tomorrow and the labor day weekend? When they begin to gouge their prices. Ops, I mean when the market forces them to raise their prices. Gotta love economics!
I've said many times it is a shame our vehicles don't run on milk. Before too long milk will be cheaper by the gallon. Unless it is already....it could be...by now...or.....right NOW....prices change as fast as the stock market ticker on my aol instant messenger.

In other news: The establishment that hosts tuesday night trivia has implemented a new ritual. Each week the winning teams will have their picture taken and members' names recorded to be featured in the Commercial Appeal newspaper. Hoorah! *groan* With a false appearance of glee and cooperativeness Evil Petting Zoo agreed. Next time...we will not use our true names. Somtimes change can make one feel uneasy. Perhaps it will be harmless. Then again it could be a step in the wrong direction.
When it comes to trivia I consider myself, as well as my teammates, rooted in tradition, anonymity, and complete domination of our trivial peers.

that's enough for now. I'm going to bed to dream about the good ole days when I could buy gas for 75 cents/gallon in 1998.

This really really really really really REALLY pisses me off.
Hostile? Demeaning? Abusive? What has happend to this country? Fear. Fear of poor public image. Fear of legal action. Fear of being seen as a racist? The NCAA should reconsider this consideration. If they go through with this, the Washington Redskins will have to find a neutral, nonoffensive name and mascot.......how about the Washington...ummm.....Monuments?

Set another plate at the dinner table. I have another friend who's been bitten by the blog bug. "Topaz Butterfly", pull up a chair and dig in; no ceremony here, make yourself at home. Elbows on the table is encouraged.

Everyone, check out her site! It's on blogspot, so it's probably much more reliable than tblog!!

I have a new pet. Well, not that I've had a pet of my own in many years. It's a young gecko. Sex undetermined. A coworker found it resting in a cardboard box on her desk last week. Quite a mystery for me since geckos are not native to TN. I'll have to make some arrangements for larger living quarters for it this week. Any ideas for a name?

2 Penguins are standing on an iceberg and one says to the other "You look like you're wearing a tuxedo."

The other penguin responds "What makes you so sure I'm not?"

Ok, so penguin humor isn't quite ..well...humorous, but there's not much to work with. The other night I went out to watch the film "March of the Penguins". It's a documentary done by National Geographic and narrated by Morgan Freeman. Yes, I was thinking the same thing; "Oh great, another movie where Freeman narrates and makes subtle philosophical methaphors a la Shawshank Redemption and Million Dollar Baby."
Not so this time. He basically told the facts of the story.
The film's purpose was to document the penguins' long and difficult breeding season in Antarctica. Emperor penguins, very large (as far as penguins go) and very interesting birds.

I wanted to go into detail about how it all goes down but just rent the movie when it goes to dvd. I will say that I am so amazed how those birds, not just survive, but overcome the harsh climate over the span of 8 months just to bring forth one offspring. How they bond as a pair and are able to recognize their mate in a sea of identical tuxedo wearing birds is impressive! When you see something like that you wonder what is behind it all? Is this just all genetic driven behavior that randomly "shook out in the wash" over millions of years? Or is this genetic driven behavior so specifically engineered that only a higher power could have designed it?
