9-22-04 Today’s the first day of fall. You couldn’t tell it by the temperature outside. Geez! Hot, sunny, humid. I’m still awaiting the nice cloudy, cool, breezy days to come in October and November. It’s the beginning of my favorite 2 seasons. Soon you’ll be able to smell it in the air. The acorns are beginning to fall. Another month and the leaves will be changing colors and falling off the trees. That old familiar smell of piles of leaves burning on a chilly afternoon will return. Out in the cotton fields you’ll be able to smell the defoliating chemicals. The constant humming of the combines in the corn and bean fields will resonate throughout the countryside. I’m going to try to get in one or two more fishing trips before thanksgiving and duck season get here. The lake is much more at rest in the fall. Just about all of the annoying recreational skiers and jet skis will be off the lake. A lot of the large yacht and houseboat owners will be heading up and down the river to dock their boats in the deeper ports for the winter. Large, riverbank eroding wave producing boats that cost multi-6 figure amounts….with catchy little names such as “A Weigh We Go”, or “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”,….”Serenity”….””Sanctuary”…….and “Jon Buoy II”…..I wonder what happened to the Jon Buoy I? Perhaps the world will never know what cruel fate she and her crew suffered.
One thing that WILL be different for me this fall is that for the first time since 1999 I will be living with other people. Yup, I’m moving. My friend Star and her sister moved into a house about 2 months ago out in Cordova. It’s a nice 3 bedroom 2 bath house. It’s only 5 minutes from bass pro shops and right in the middle of my sales territory for my full time job. It’s also only 10 minutes from my gym which is an added bonus! Star asked me if I would be interested in moving in and I had been wanting to move for the last few months. I guess I’ll be living a “Jack Tripper” role now. Although I’m not sure which sister would be Janet and which Chrissy. Most days I’ll be out working both jobs and won’t be home enough to hang out and talk unless it’s an off night. We all kinda do our own thing I suppose. I’ll be able to save some money so I got that going for me. But I will surely miss midtown Memphis. Probably won’t be coming here to Otherlands as often. Oh my, what ever will I do!? Where will I go for inspiration!? I’ll miss being so close to my favorite movie theater (Studio on the Square) and the P&H. I’ll also miss having my own place and all the privacy it provided. But it will be good to have some roomies to talk to when things are slow.
I still haven’t packed anything up. When I moved into my apartment it was completely furnished…even down to the silverware and dishes in the cabinets! So most of what I have to pack will be clothes and junk. I’ve got a few huge boxes to throw it all in.
My friends Greg (foolish consistency) and Jeanine should find out today the sex of their baby. Jeanine’s due in February. Greg was telling us last night while at trivia about how that one piece of knowledge will lay a pathway for the rest of his life. Whichever it is will determine a multitude of possibilities. If it’s a girl you can look forward to ABC…..if a boy…XYZ. That’s an understatement for sure! This woman walked in with her 2 little girls just awhile ago. The girls seem to be about 3 and 4 yrs old. All dressed up in cute pink outfits and necklaces. The younger one seems to be the more outspoken one yet the older the ring leader. I’ve never really given much serious thought to having my own children however every time I am out at shopping somewhere or at work and a little girl comes by I can’t help but smile and imagine how it must be to have your own. It’s a shame they can’t stay that age longer. These are surely the “wonder years” with daughters….and sons for that matter. Greg, you’re about to find out which direction your life will take. Both equal in joy and trials peaks and valleys. Moving in with 2 new roommates is big enough a decision for me now……I can only imagine what your future will hold. After watching my cousin Brian go through his first 2 years now as a father of a wild little son I can tell you that you’re task is huge. Just today while we were on the phone his son drop trow and commenced to “do his paperwork” right in the living room floor. It’s a good thing y’all have wooden floors!

| My new Pet |

My apartment does not allow pets. At least not the 4 legged hairy kind. I guess I could have a fish or perhaps a bird but I've never tested that option. But I found this little fella out in the parking lot last week and decided I would see what it turns into. It's a Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillar...well it was a caterpillar; now it's a chrysalis.
Here are some pictures of what it looked like when I found it, what it looks like now, and what it hopefully will become.

notice the fake eyes on its back. Part of a defense mechanism. When attacked by a bird or whenever alarmed it will stand up on its back feet, swell up its front end, and extend 2 small antenna-like appendages resembling a snake's forked tongue...pretty cool.

on the left is what it is now...a chrysalis. nice camo pattern huh?

there's the typical adult form...perhaps you've seen it...on the grill of your car?
there's also a black phase too:

Still haven't decided a name yet. i don't really want to get attached to a butterfly though. Somehow that's not too masculine.

This is a pic of some pictures hanging on the wall at the P&H Cafe where we play trivia.
The main one there reminds me a lot of Otherlands.....can you guess why?

Wow, what a weekend. I got to see a great college football game saturday night. The UT volunteers showed great poise and defeated the Florida Gators with a 50yd field goal. There's only 2 songs that draw me near to tears one being the National Antheim, the other ROCKY TOP!
I finally figured out how to get pics back on my blog so look for a couple more later today.
As for the title of this blog....I got to see a very good movie friday. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. It was a mostly bluescreen, digitally made film however the cinematography was impressive and orignal in respect to current sci-fi movies. If you are a big fan of old 30's film noir styles you'll love how this movie is done. The hazed and almost fuzzy details of the sets and the highlighted faces of the characters, especially their eyes takes you back to the old classics. The special effects were amazing and the robots were very "old school" 30's & 40's comic book/war of the world-esque.
The plot was good and the occasional humorous moments between the hero and leading lady reminded me a lot of the Indiana Jones movies in many ways. I would recommend if you're a movie buff you MUST go see this movie..and if you do call me up because I wanna go again too!

Took a pic of this sign along a country road in PA back in April while visiting my good friend, and sometime guset hypo-blogger, Kim W. I'm not sure but I think it could be some sort of safe sex awareness ad for the local Amish poplulation. But I could be wrong. :)

That's me on the left, Rachel, Alan, and Kenny.

Me, Ginger, Jason, and Mountain Dew

This is Tara, Alan, and Ginger#2. Ginger #2 has 4 kids now! Alan was my best friend in high school. He used to have longer hair(mullet) and I always refered to him as McGuyver.

That's Leslie in the black top. The girl who got me out on the dance floor. Still no one has come forward with those pictures.....thank God!

Before I get into my thoughts on my high school reunion I need to talk about something that's been on my mind for a while now. We are so lucky to live in the A.D. era. I mean we know what year something happened because we can count upwards from the time of Christ/ It must have been pretty hard for those B.C. folks. I mean you couldn't tell anyone what year you were born in. Someone would ask you, "hey, what year were you born?" And you'd have to reply "I don't know yet, the Messiah hasn't been born yet so I don't know how far back to count." Think of all the back tracking and subtracting historians had to do when Jesus finally came. "Dude, I'm going to need a bigger abacus!" Also I bet it was hard for young people to get into the clubs in Sodom and Gommorah. You're driver's license wouldn't have any birthdate.
Ok, I had a great time at my reunion. My graduating class had about 160 students but to my reckoning only about 30 of us showed up. Many brought spouses. The most surprusing thing to me was many of the cute girls in school are now married, have 1-4 kids and are even hotter today. Cleavage seemed to be the theme of the night. I guess cleavage was out 10 years ago which is very unfortunate. Another surprise was that the smartest guy in my class who also graduated college with me is now a truck driver for Dupont. Not quite the highest utilization of his mental powers but i guess a lot can happen in 10 years. I spent the first half of the night visiting with one of my good friends, Jay, who was also a roommate and classmate in college. He's now a 3rd grade teacher. another former college classmate, jessica, is now a chemistry teacher in high school back home. Jason Herndon used to be a long haired drummer who was a huge KISS fan.....his hair is shorter but he's still a rocker. The next half of the night was a little unexpected. One of my old friends, Leslie, seemed to be quite interested in me. She was constantly attempting to get me out on the dance floor. Those who know me know I'm a typical no rythm white boy who has no business being anywhere near a dance floor. But I suppose Leslie didn't know this and wouldn't take no for an answer.....so yes there are some pictures somewhere out there now of me and I would offer a hefty reward for anyone who would help me destroy them. If i didn't know any better I would think some of the girls had something in mind for hooking me up with Leslie. There seemed to be a conspiracy there but nothing happened. She slipped in a surprise kiss but that's all. I couldn't sleep that night though. There were so many thoughts going through my head. A lot of memories of all the fun times we once had. The trouble we got into, the classes we had. I realized how much I have done and how many people I've nearly forgotten. I gained some great friends while in college and some have become family to me (that's you sandra and jason). But there's still a good bit of the small town kid in me. The few things that really define me are still alive and strong. It really scares me to imagine what the next 10 years will bring but I will definitely make an effort to re-establish some of the old friendships. So that's the impression I was left with last weekend. I'm feeling pretty good today. Trivia tonight.....time to kick arse!

Some sit in the sun and others in the shade. Some lean back on the counter, others choose to lay out on the patio. The rest, the ones that like to read, find the corner sofa a nice place to stay. They all remind me of cats in their own ways. Instead of catnip they prefer coffee. New ones walk in and stroll by the others at the counter. They casually acknowledge each other by walking by and giving a brief exchange of smiles and eye contact and maybe a small hug then they move on to their own spot. Here’s one making her rounds. Checking all the tables, cleaning, making sure everything is in its place. She’s not really paying attention to anyone else, just her own business. Another one now, she can’t make up her mind where she wants to settle. Too drafty under the fan, too warm in the sun near the window. She’s moving around slowly, gliding along….ahhhh…she chose the seat near the potted plants. Cats seem to always love potted plants. Maybe they feel hidden there pretending to be like their bigger cousins who roam the wilderness. Then there’s the playful one. She works here. She’s always hyper and always looking for someone to talk to. If I only had a ball of twine or a string with a feather tied on the end I could have some fun. There are even some that nurse their babies here. Out in the open. Not caring who watches.
